The Synthesis and Chemical Biology Group concentrates on creating and understanding new molecules, which will lead to the discovery of new or refined drugs as well as novel and advanced materials for industrial applications. The centre is also involved in the development of innovative tools to investigate biological assays such as neurotoxicity, neuroprotection, antibacterial and antiviral. The centre focuses in the research area of organic chemistry namely development of synthetic methodology and structural exploration/ synthetic studies of some nitrogen heterocycles with a pyrrolidine ring system towards bioactive natural compounds. The tissue culture laboratory is equipped with a bioanalyzer for DNA, RNA and proteins analyses, and GloMax®-Multi+ Detection System for determining cell viability, cytotoxicity and apoptosis. Currently, the centre has more than 10 postgraduate students conducting research in various synthesis and biological research areas.
